Herbert is a native of Liberia who met Mary while attending North Carolina A&T and convinced her to marry him and return to Liberia. Over 30 years in Liberia, the Zigbuo’s have lived to build hospitals and schools only to see them destroyed by warring rebel groups during the 14 year civil war. In 2004, democracy returned to Liberia and they set out to rebuild, offering former child combatants an opportunity for literacy training and to learn construction skills. Today they have successfully rebuilt schools, a hospital, nursing school, and are working in Gbarnga to improve opportunity for children to attend school as well as vocational training. Herbert and Mary Zigbuo have dedicated their lives to the people of Liberia.
